Waste Stream Utilisation Study in County Monaghan

Study of Byproducts  / Waste Generated in County Monaghan

A collaborative study by Monaghan Integrated Development Ltd, in partnership with the Clean Technology Centre, Munster Technological University.

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to identify and develop practical opportunities for businesses and social enterprises across County Monaghan to improve how materials and waste streams are currently managed. By examining how existing resources are used—and often underutilised—the project seeks to support the transition toward more sustainable, resource-efficient practices.

A central focus of the study is the promotion of circular economy principles, including the circular bioeconomy. This involves shifting away from traditional “take-make-dispose” models toward systems where materials are reused, repurposed, or recycled for as long as possible. By identifying locally available waste streams and by-products, the study will explore how these can be transformed into valuable inputs for other processes or industries.

The initial phase of the project will involve mapping the types of materials generated within the county. This will provide a foundation for identifying successful case studies and best practices from other regions that could be adapted and implemented in County Monaghan. Ultimately, the goal is to support local innovation, reduce waste, and create new economic opportunities.

Industry Engagement

As part of this study, we are engaging directly with businesses across a range of sectors to better understand:

  • The types of materials they use and waste generated
  • The volume and frequency of waste material generation
  • Current management practices and end destinations for these waste materials

This information will enable us to identify targeted, material-specific solutions that complement and enhance existing business operations. By aligning potential solutions with real-world business needs, we aim to ensure practical and scalable outcomes.
