Innovating Communities (IC) is a new major training programme aimed at enhancing innovation and creativity among Monaghan communities. IC, a LEADER Cooperation project, offers free facilitated training and mentoring in Design Thinking (DT), aka Problem Solving, to tackle local issues and ideas. Led by Monaghan Integrated Development (MID) across our neighbour counties Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan and Louth, IC will bring exciting benefits to our local towns and villages.

Since IC began, community individuals, groups and businesses have been invited to submit Challenges on the project website at www.innovating.ie/ideas. Using submitted Monaghan Challenges, MID have formed their first batch of free Training Courses and invite community and business individuals and groups, who want to learn the DT process and or have an interest in the particular topic, to register to participate.

Courses that are open for registration are; Reimagining Community Spaces as Digital Hubs - Register before Mon 10th May which aims to generate innovative ideas for creating and sustaining digital hubs through collaboration between community centres, groups and interested individuals, and Attracting People to Work and Live in County Monaghan - Register before Mon 17th May which focuses on generating community action that will attract people to live and work in the county’s rural communities, such as providing high quality jobs, rejuvenating our town centres, and repurposing general infrastructure. ‘Climate Action, Biodiversity and Sustainability’ is another course which is now closed for registrations. Missed this opportunity? Submit a Challenge or round up a group to participate in another Course similar or inspired by this existing Course.

The training will employ a ‘person centred design’ approach where groups and individuals are helped to identify topics important to their community or business and the training support will be provided to work with people to help them explore ideas and best possible solutions. The process will provide a high level of support to help community groups and would-be innovators move more confidently and creates a process for the discovery of community needs, idea generation and the testing of solutions.

To register your interest for the training and for more information, please visit www.innovating.ie / contact Collette  087 176 1732.

Free training designed to solve local challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought great change across the globe and has highlighted many challenges, old and new, that our country is facing. More than anything, it has demonstrated the resilience and determination of our communities, who came together in a multitude of ways to support, inspire, and overcome.

The importance of community-led action has never been more obvious, and with it the need to empower and facilitate such vital work. Innovating Communities is a two year project that aims to train and mentor over 900 participants (known as Challengers) from six counties (Monaghan, Cavan, Louth, Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal) by teaching them valuable Design Thinking skills in order to create and enact solutions to local issues.

Anyone can sign up to be a Challenger. Maybe you want to be more involved in your local community but don't know where to start. Perhaps you're a member of a group/council/club who want help tackling a specific Challenge. Or you could be a community veteran who just wants to learn a new way of thinking. Whoever you are, Innovating Communities is free and accessible to all.

The Challenger's Journey
IC challengers journey

  1. Challengers start by registering on the Innovating Communities website to meet like-minded learners and stay up-to-date on all the action.
  2. Challenges (any issues or opportunities that you have identified in your area) should be submitted to the Challenge Bank. To keep your community are the heart of the project, these Challenges will be collated and used to form the basis of our training Courses.
  3. Groups can be clubs, councils, and associations - any kind of group at all. If you're a member of a pre-existing Group, why not add it to the site so others can learn about it. Alternatively, you can join a Group already on the site, or start your own!
  4. Courses will be available on the website very soon. Challengers can sign up for Courses that relate to a Challenge they have encountered or simply have a passion for.
  5. Design Thinking is a process that puts people at the heart of solving Challenges. Every Challenger will learn these skills, which have been used by some of the world's biggest companies to achieve success.
  6. By the completion of the project we believe every Challenger will have the confidence and ability to find solutions for current and future Challenges; helping to sustain long-term community-led action.

Ready to begin your journey? Sign up now and start to innovate your community.

The Government has launched a public consultation process for the next Climate Action Plan. Everyone has the opportunity to engage with the online Climate Conversations platform, which will seek people’s opinions on various elements of Climate Action and particularly perspectives on actions at a local level.

You don’t need to be a climate expert for your opinion to be valued, Government want to hear from as many people as possible in order to ensure that a diverse range of perspectives and experiences inform the development of the next Climate Action Plan.

We are pleased to announce the roll out of the new Transitional LEADER Programme for County Monaghan commencing 1st April 2021 that will bridge the gap between the wind-up of the 2014-2020 LEADER Programme and the start of the next EU Programme in 2023.

A key focus of the Transitional LEADER Programme is on building capacity within communities that have not received LEADER funding to-date. It will also continue to support and encourage entrepreneurship and job creation in the county, and support projects that address the climate agenda and digital transformation, as well as encourage rural communities across the county to build on their existing strengths and assets.

The Transitional LEADER Programme seeks to address the challenges facing rural Ireland and places emphases on the following priorities:
  • Supports to rural businesses seeking to reach new markets, expand, innovate and/or diversify in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and/or Brexit, with a particular emphasis on providing support to businesses in the food sector.
  • Community-based projects that seek to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Supports and capacity building for communities that have not previously received assistance under LEADER or other rural programmes, engage directly with new applicants to develop projects and enhance collaboration within communities.
  • Support for new and innovative projects in the areas of climate change, environmental protection and the green economy.
  • Maximise the potential of broadband and the digital economy in communities, including through skills development and building awareness and usage of available remote working facilities.
  • Encouragement of projects that utilise the Smart Village approach to local area development.
If you have a project idea and would like to find out more about the opportunities available through LEADER for your community or business, phone us on 042 9749 500 or complete an Expression of Interest form here and email it to .

All Expressions of Interest received will be assessed for eligibility for funding in line with the LEADER Operating Rules, Monaghan Local Development Strategy and the priorities for Transitional Funding. If your proposed project is eligible, you will be invited to submit a project application.
