Dundalk Salmon Anglers sought LEADER funding to conduct an advisory survey on parts of the River Fane and feeder stream Lough Muckno. The survey was to highlight any issues of concern e.g. causes of pollution (commercial/ residential or agricultural), any advice in terms of ecological improvements, habitat enhancement and promotion of biodiversity.

The survey carried out consisted of a mixture of aerial photography and “boots on the ground” observation to establish areas of interest which were having a positive or negative impact on the rivers habitat and water quality. This information was then compiled to create an advisory report which was then circulated and used by the participating angling clubs so as to inform and tackle issues which were identified as compounding the biodiversity within the river system.

As a result of this funding, it is the hoped that the future of habitat and general water quality will consequently have a positive impact on the aquatic biodiversity including juvenile salmonids.
