Community Centres throughout Ireland are an important space for both young and older people to congregate and Emyvale Leisure Centre is no different. The centre caters for a range of events and activity including: handball, squash, martial arts, indoor soccer, basketball, Irish dancing, keep-fit classes, bingo, various school activities, parties and events and funeral receptions.

The centre is operated by twelve committee members who approached LEADER for funding after all events had to be cancelled due to health and safety issues. Rainwater was leaking through the roof proofing hazardous and needed to be replaced. The existing roof was made from asbestos so the work was going to be costly but necessary in order to continue the wide variety of activity offered daily. The group also identified the need to install a lift so as to make the centre more accessible for older people and anyone with a disability to access.

On completion of the project, Monica Mc Kernan, Treasurer, Emyvale Leisure Centre said “Without the LEADER funding we would not be able to do any of the above work and we are grateful for the funding received. It has added so much to the centre; the roof was a necessity but the addition of the lift has greatly improved the facilities in the centre.”
